Rolling Gate Repair

Uggh!  After almost 2 inches of rain Tuesday Night, one of 4 Seasons Homes Services clients in North Dallas called us with a major problem.  She could not get her wooden gate across her driveway to open.  Not a big deal if you walk to work, but her car was blocked in and she needed to go.

The good news is that we offer all types of Garage Door Service, Overhead Door Service, Remote Gate Service and Rollaway Gate Service.  For more information, go to http://www.4sdfw.com/ or click on http://www.4sdfw.com/4SDFW/Overhead_Doors.html

We see lots of calls for these rolling driveway gates not operating after a big rain.  The reason is that the wood on the gate takes on a lot of water during a heavy storm.  This causes the gate to weigh double what it normally does, and puts a strain on the opening device or causes the gate to come off of the rolling track.

We were able to get her out and off to work, but the long term solution is not to repair the gate operator.  It is to seal the wood on the gate so it does not take on water.  4 Seasons Home Services is able to cover both of these types of repairs.  Through our Handyman Division, we can do almost any major or minor repair to a home inside or out.  For more information of how we can serve you in the Dallas area, please visit our website at http://www.4sdfw.com/4SDFW/Handyman.html or call 214-550-0311.

If you do need garage door service, overhead door service or remote gate service.  Please contact us at 214-550-0311 or visit http://www.4sdfw.com/4SDFW/Overhead_Doors.html.  Services include:  Broken Springs, Doors Off Track, Remote Control Problems & Gate Service.

Metallic Paint really Shines, but Beware of Potential Pitfalls

One of the trendy & cool things to do these days in the paint world is metallic paint.  It offers a fresh clean look and goes with a wide variety of styles.  4 Seasons Home Services http://www.4sdfw.com/ recently painted a Dallas client's formal living area with a Silver Metallic Paint.  From the before and after pictures, you can see how nice it turned out.

Metallic paint has been around for a while, but has been used more as with a faux finish than as a base coat.  Many retailers have abandoned to marketing of this.  They still carry the products, but do not have color samples available to take home.  This can make selecting the correct color a bit of a challenge.  I asked a retailer why they no longer offered samples, and they told me it was because of the challenges that exist in applying metallic paint.  See the link below for how to purchase the stuff we used on this particular job:  Metallic Paint Ralph Lauren

There is a special process to the painting.  If you do not follow it, it will look quite awful.  If you do, it is very attractive.  The problem is that the method is not printed on the side of the can.  Most good painters that have experience with this will know how to apply and leave you with a good result.  However, that does not mean that everyone on their crew will.  The challenge is that lap marks will surface if the paint does not get applied AND dry in even measure.  All paints have this potential pitfall, but with a metallic finish, the visibility of error is intensified.  You will see the transition from your brush marks where you cut in to the roller pattern as well.  If you are not skilled in masking this, you might consider hiring someone who is.

If you embark on hiring someone to do this for you, make sure that they know the proper products to use and the process which will ensure a quality finished look.  A guy that says," I have been painting stuff for years," many not be the right person for the job.  Ask for their experience specifically with metallic paint.  References are always a good idea as well.  It is a pretty easy fix to go over with more paint, but at $60/gallon, this can be a costly redo.

Grow your own Food!

One of the coolest things that I have discovered in the past few years is how simple it is to grow your own healthy, organic food in your own backyard.  You do not need farming skills or even a green thumb.  Truth is, the more you know about farming the harder this will be.

A customer of mine gave me this book a while back because she wanted a small herb garden built.  I made one for her and she decided not to use it.  So it put it in my yard and started growing stuff on my own.  It was quite simple and amazing how much food you could get from so few plants.  The kids loved it too because they took ownership of the whole process.  They loved it and would eat anything that we grew!!!!  It is amazing.  If you are interested in seeing how simple it is to grow your own food, click on the link above to purchase the book that got me started.
When you are ready to build one of these, give us a call and we will design, build and fill yours up so it will be ready to plant.
